April 26, 2002 - Why Am I Here?
Why Am I Here? I'm here because I'm a mom and a nurse. I want to listen to the stories of the people, especially the mothers who must have the same hopes for their children as I do for mine, but whose ability to hope is tested daily by the weight of constant oppression. I just had the sense that I had to make myself available, totally available, for whatever God had in mind. No agenda, no great plans or ideas - just being there. "Here I am, Lord, send me." We have a relationship with brothers and sisters of the ELCJ. And right now this church and its pastors are suffering. St. Paul wrote, "If one member of the body suffers, all suffer together with it." I'm here to extend the love and concern of 75,000 New England Synod Lutherans at what feels like a critical time. I pray that in being present we will offer some consolation and hope. But I know enough from experience that we will not come away ourselves empty-handed; their faith and courage and hope will be a witness to us as well.
