May 3-4, 2002 - Days 9 and 10

Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4, Amman, Jordan - Days Nine and Ten

We left yesterday, Friday, from Jerusalem with the Younan family. Jacob, Bishop Younan's driver, took us past Jericho and to the Allenby Bridge crossing into Jordan. On the Jordanian side we drove in two cars to Amman, arriving at our hotel by early afternoon. Bishop Younan is a frequent presence at the checkpoint, and that proved helpful as we made it through rather painlessly. Fourteen years ago I had a much different, more intimidating experience at the same place.

One of the families of the church hosted us at their home in the afternoon for refreshments, and it was there I learned that it's difficult in this culture to say "no." Hospitality and a gracious sharing seem to be a way of life. And we quickly learned that affection is shown with frequent hugs and kisses. It was really quite lovely. As for the food, I'm glad I don't live here as I could never maintain my weight.

Friday evening we worshiped at the church for the Good Friday liturgy, followed by a late dinner at the invitation of the church council.

Today, Saturday, we made some visits and made plans to see Mount Nebo. A traffic accident with one of the two cars changed that plan, and Pastor Azar instead gave our delegation a tour of Amman. Late afternoon through the evening each of us had time alone, the first we really had during the trip.

Tomorrow we celebrate Easter and look forward to dinner at the Azar's home afterward.
