Publicity Project of the ELCJ
(Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jerusalem)

"The Human Face of Palestinian Christians"

Developed by Rev. Dr. Mary E. Jensen

Product:

Six one-page flyers with colored photo and text, attached to weekly mailings.

Text (the same on each flyer) introduces Palestinian Christians, depicts them as part and parcel of Palestinian society, living and struggling together under Israeli occupation with Muslim sisters and brothers.
Calls for an end to the Israeli military occupation and the formation of an independent Palestinian state for all Palestinians; asks people to contact their congregations and elected officials about the need.
Sponsored by the ELCJ, with a short description of the church and its work, headed by Bishop Dr. Munib Younan, with web site and E-mail addresses.

Photo (different on each flyer) shows men, women, young people, children, clergy, church leaders; individually and as small groups.

Distribution:

The ELCJ will distribute the flyers one by one by E-mail to its newsletter mailing list with ideas to encourage widespread, imaginative usage.

Distribution will occur every week for six weeks, sharing a page with a different photo but with the same text, as described above.

The ELCJ encourages large church bodies, i.e., USA, Scandinavian and German church bodies, to implement the use of the flyers for distribution in their denominations, on web sites and for use in the mass media.

Ideas for Usage:

  1. Post on bulletin boards, walls, windows in church/community as posters.

  2. Duplicate for distribution to a congregation, class, group.

  3. When people have access to a copy (as in a church service or a study group), the pastor or study leader may comment on the flyer, emphasizing the existence of Palestinian Christians, lifting the flyer up for consideration and action, encouraging sharing.

  4. Make copies available for people to share with their neighbors, co-workers, friends and family to emphasize the presence of Palestinian Christians. Remember community newspapers, community TV Stations and web pages as possibilities for showing the page, as well as commercial mass media.

  5. Use copies of the flyers as discussion starters in various kinds of classes and groups. Talk about the presence of Palestinian Christians and their situation; about the side-by-side struggle of Muslims and Christians under Israeli occupation, how the events seen on TV, etc., are all impacting Christians as well as Muslims; how help is needed to speak to elected officials and church leaders about the great need.

  6. Include the flyers in monthly newsletters or mailings and on web sites.

  7. Send or bring the flyers to the attention of elected national officials and use as an entry point to discuss the situation for Palestinians.

  8. Use the flyers in Sunday school and youth groups, helping children and young people connect with the people on some of the flyers, perhaps writing letters or sending offerings.

  9. Make a collection of the various flyers as they come available, perhaps posting them on a wall with a map of Palestine.

  10. Share the flyers at ecumenical meetings, with other church bodies, with conferences, synods. Make copies for distribution at assemblies, conventions, board meetings, etc. In each case, please note the facts and the calls to action on the flyer.

  11. FIND OTHER IDEAS OF YOUR OWN!

DUPLICATION:

Every effort has been made to make the flyers easy to duplicate. It is highly preferable that color copies be made so the photograph will have the greatest effect but if this is not possible, the black/white copies are preferable to not using the flyer at all.

Some computers and printers may "rearrange" the text of the flyer, even putting part of it on a second page. If necessary, please arrange the text to be on one page, noting that the last line of the flyer includes both the ELCJ web site and the ELCJ E-mail address.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING YOU CAN DO TO DISTRIBUTE THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PALESTINIAN CHRISTIANS.
